Biden extends deportation protection for 900,000 Venezuelan and Salvadoran immigrants
President Joe Biden's administration has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 600,000 Venezuelans and over 200,000 Salvadorans in the U.S. This extension allows them to remain for an additional 18 months, ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration. The Department of Homeland Security cited ongoing humanitarian crises in Venezuela and environmental disasters in El Salvador as reasons for the extension. This move fulfills Biden's commitment to protect vulnerable migrants. TPS has been a target for Republicans, who argue it encourages illegal immigration. The program, established in 1990, currently protects about 1 million people from 17 countries in the U.S.
