Biden extends deportation protections for nearly 1 million immigrants ahead of Trump administration
The Biden administration has extended temporary deportation protections for nearly 1 million immigrants from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela. This extension lasts for 18 months, allowing them to remain in the U.S. and work. These protections, known as Temporary Protected Status, were set to expire in the spring. The decision comes as communities prepare for the incoming Trump administration, which previously sought to end TPS for some countries. The extension affects approximately 232,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese, 104,000 Ukrainians, and 600,000 Venezuelans. The announcement does not expand eligibility for TPS.
