Biden extends temporary protected status for Venezuelans and Salvadorans as Trump plans immigration reforms
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 600,000 Venezuelans and over 230,000 Salvadorans for 18 months. This decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to implement stricter immigration policies. Additionally, TPS has been extended for more than 103,000 Ukrainians and 1,900 Sudanese already in the U.S. The Biden administration has expanded TPS to cover around 1 million people, while Trump's previous term saw attempts to limit its use. TPS allows individuals to remain and work in the U.S. temporarily, but does not provide a path to citizenship. Critics argue that renewals can become automatic, regardless of conditions in home countries.
