Biden extends temporary protected status for Venezuelans and Salvadorans as Trump prepares immigration changes
President Joe Biden has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 600,000 Venezuelans and over 230,000 Salvadorans living in the U.S. for another 18 months. This decision comes just before President-elect Donald Trump, who plans to implement stricter immigration policies, takes office. The Department of Homeland Security also extended TPS for more than 103,000 Ukrainians and 1,900 Sudanese. TPS allows individuals to remain in the U.S. legally but does not provide a path to citizenship. Critics argue that renewals can become automatic despite conditions in home countries. The extensions are based on ongoing humanitarian crises in Venezuela and environmental issues in El Salvador. Advocates continue to push for TPS protections for other countries facing similar challenges.
