Biden extends temporary protected status for Venezuelans and Salvadorans in the US

The Biden administration has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 600,000 Venezuelans and over 200,000 Salvadorans in the U.S. for another 18 months. This decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, raising concerns about future TPS policies. The extension for Salvadorans, originally set to expire in March 2025, is based on ongoing environmental issues in El Salvador. The Department of Homeland Security cited severe weather events as a reason for the renewal, which allows beneficiaries to remain and work legally in the U.S. Currently, about 1 million immigrants from 17 countries benefit from TPS. Advocates are urging the Biden administration to consider extensions for other countries facing similar challenges, as many TPS designations are set to expire soon.
