Bihar to install 250 new power substations soon
Bihar plans to install 250 new power substations starting in the financial year 2025-26. The project is expected to be finished by 2026-27. State Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav announced this during an assembly session. He was discussing the energy department's budget of Rs 13,484 crore, which was approved by voice vote. The new substations will help improve the power grid and increase the transmission capacity. Currently, the system can handle 14,928 megawatts (MW) of power. After the new installations, this capacity will rise to 16,632 MW. This change aims to provide better and uninterrupted power supply to consumers. Yadav also responded to claims made by RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav about offering 200 units of free electricity to consumers. He mentioned that the state government already provides a significant power subsidy, benefiting around 2.12 crore consumers. Farmers enjoy lower electricity rates because of this subsidy. Furthermore, the energy minister highlighted efforts to reduce power theft and mentioned that profits for local distribution companies have increased. Revenue collection in the current financial year has also seen a rise compared to the previous year. In addition, Yadav reported on the installation of smart meters, with 62 lakh meters already in place against a goal of 1.48 crore. The remaining meters are set to be installed by September next year. He noted that power demand in Bihar has surged over the years and further initiatives are underway to bolster electricity production, including new thermal plants and solar energy projects.
