Billionaire wealth reaches $15 trillion as number of billionaires grows to 2,769
The world's billionaires saw their wealth increase to $15 trillion in the past year, according to Oxfam's report. The number of billionaires rose to 2,769, with 204 new billionaires added in 2024. This marks a significant acceleration in wealth accumulation. Oxfam noted that 36% of billionaire wealth is inherited, with many heirs expected to receive $6.3 trillion over the next 15 years. Half of the billionaires live in countries without inheritance taxes for direct descendants. In response to the report, over 370 billionaires and millionaires urged political leaders to impose higher taxes on the wealthy. They emphasized the need to address the negative effects of extreme wealth concentration.
