BIS raids Amazon, Flipkart for uncertified products compliance

economictimes.indiatimes.com

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has conducted raids on Amazon and Flipkart warehouses to target non-compliant products. The operations took place in cities like Lucknow, Gurugram, and Delhi. BIS aims to remove uncertified products from e-commerce platforms. During the raids, investigators found many uncertified items, such as toys and kitchen appliances. At Amazon warehouses, hundreds of items were seized. Similar findings were made at a Flipkart warehouse managed by Instakart Services Pvt Ltd. The investigation linked many of these uncertified products to Techvision International Pvt Ltd. BIS found thousands of items, including electric food mixers and gas stoves, that did not have the required BIS certification. Brands associated with these products include Digismart and Activa. BIS highlighted the risks of using non-certified items, which lack independent testing for safety. They have begun legal actions under the BIS Act of 2016 against the companies involved. Fines can reach up to ten times the product's value, and imprisonment for up to two years is possible. To protect consumers, BIS encourages the use of the BIS Care app. This app helps users verify product certifications and report any non-compliant items. It provides essential information on which products require BIS certification. Through these initiatives, BIS aims to help consumers make informed choices and ensure the safety of products available in the market.
