BITS Pilani studies microplastics' effects on Goa's coral reefs
Researchers at BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, are starting a new study on the effects of microplastics on coral reefs in Goa. The Grande Island is known for its rich coral biodiversity. Recent studies by WWF-India have highlighted the need for urgent action to protect these areas from tourists and other visitors. The collaboration with Coastal Impact, a local conservation NGO, aims to explore how microplastics affect coral reefs and local communities. The partnership began with a signed agreement last August that focuses on academic and career opportunities for students. Prof. S D Manjare, head of the chemical engineering department, explained that the study will assess how microplastics leak harmful substances affecting corals and their associated algae. The researchers plan to conduct experiments on-site and, if permitted, in the lab. Prof. Meenal Kowshik, the dean of administration at BITS Pilani, emphasized the importance of this partnership. She believes it will enhance students' research skills and encourage collaboration within the community. As climate change continues to harm coral ecosystems, research on smaller reefs, like those at Grande Island, is becoming increasingly vital.
