BJP criticizes Omar Abdullah's remarks on Punjabis
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for comments perceived as negative toward Punjabis and Haryanvis. The party suggests that Abdullah's remarks align with an anti-Punjab agenda associated with the Congress party. Sarchand Singh, a BJP spokesperson, highlighted the contributions of Punjabis during historical events such as the Partition. He emphasized that Indian soldiers from Punjab and Haryana protected Kashmir during that time. Abdullah recently mentioned that Maharaja Hari Singh implemented state subject laws in 1927 to safeguard Jammu residents from investments by Punjabis. Singh responded by voicing concern over Abdullah's "provocative statements," arguing that they contribute to an anti-Punjab sentiment. Moreover, Singh reminded Abdullah of his grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah, who faced imprisonment for opposing the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh. The BJP stands firmly against any rhetoric that they believe promotes division between communities.
