BJP MP calls PM Modi Shivaji's reincarnation, sparks controversy
A BJP MP's claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the reincarnation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has caused a stir in Indian politics. Critics from the opposition are calling this statement an insult to the legacy of Shivaji, amid tensions in Nagpur relating to protests over Aurangzeb's tomb. Pradeep Purohit, a BJP Member of Parliament, made the assertion on March 17 during a session in Parliament. He mentioned an encounter with a saint who allegedly told him that Modi was Shivaji in a past life. Purohit believes Modi has returned to guide India toward becoming a developed nation. The Parliamentary session is ongoing, scheduled to run until April 4. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a prominent Indian ruler known for establishing an independent kingdom from the Sultanate of Bijapur in the late 17th century. His legacy includes the Maratha Confederacy and his crowning in 1674 at Raigad Fort. Purohit's comments sparked criticism from opposition leaders. Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad condemned the remarks, asserting they insult Shivaji's legacy. Gaikwad accused BJP leaders of aiming to undermine the reputation of Shivaji, a revered figure in Maharashtra and beyond. Another Congress leader, Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena, criticized Purohit's comparison as "absolutely unacceptable" and called for action against what she termed the "shameless sycophants" of BJP. These tensions come as Nagpur faces unrest due to past protests involving Aurangzeb's tomb, resulting in violence and a curfew in some areas.
