Blackbuck thrive as invasive trees cleared at Tamil Nadu sanctuary
The Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu has cleared 45 hectares of the invasive tree species Prosopis juliflora, improving conditions for the local blackbuck population. This area previously housed one-fourth of the sanctuary's land. With the removal of the invasive species, native grasses are being planted, enhancing the habitat for over 2,000 blackbuck, the largest population of this endangered antelope in the state. Local women are involved in seed collection, providing them with employment. The project emphasizes community participation in biodiversity protection and is part of broader ecosystem recovery efforts in Tamil Nadu.
