Bloc candidate claims Liberals worse than Trump, ignites outrage
A Bloc Québécois Member of Parliament, Denis Trudel, has sparked controversy after claiming that the Liberal Party of Canada poses a greater threat than U.S. President Donald Trump. In a now-deleted social media post, he expressed that he was "much more afraid of the Liberals than of Trump." Trudel did not elaborate on his concerns but has previously criticized the Liberals on various issues, including housing, environmental policies, and the handling of the conflict in Gaza. Steven Guilbeault, the Liberal Party's representative in Quebec, reacted strongly to Trudel's comments. He found it "baffling" to suggest that the Liberals are a bigger threat than Trump, especially given the economic impacts of Trump's tariffs on Quebec workers. He emphasized the need for political leaders to consider the broader societal implications of their statements. Trudel, who represents Longueuil-Saint-Hubert, is known for his impactful social media presence and has voiced fears about federalists controlling the political narrative in Quebec. Recent polls indicate strong support for Quebec independence, with Trudel celebrating figures showing 40 percent backing for the movement. Despite this, opinions within the Bloc remain mixed. Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet did not condemn Trudel's comment, suggesting that different viewpoints exist within the party. He noted that Trudel's fears in his riding might shape his perspective on the Liberals. Guilbeault, however, criticized Blanchet's response, calling it almost as troubling as Trudel's original remarks.
