BNP demands audit of Bengaluru's Solid Waste Management funds
The Bengaluru Nava Nirmana Party (BNP) is raising concerns about how the city’s Solid Waste Management (SWM) funds are being used. They are specifically questioning the management of the ₹1,000 crore fund and the ₹463 crore assigned to the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited for garbage collection. BNP is calling for a public audit and transparency regarding these funds. They believe that fixing financial issues could reduce the need for an extra user fee for garbage services. BNP member Poongothai Paramasivam criticized the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for wanting to charge residents more without explaining why the current budget is insufficient. Paramasivam pointed out that citizens already pay property tax that includes a SWM charge. She questioned where that money is going and why there has been no public audit of SWM spending. The SNP also mentioned concerns about late payments to sanitation workers, urging that funds should focus on paying them on time. BNP General Secretary Srikanth Narasimhan criticized BBMP for a lack of accountability due to the absence of an elected council. He stated that BBMP is implementing policies without getting public feedback. Narasimhan insists that a thorough audit should be completed before any new fees are introduced.
