The Department of Tourism in Central Visayas (DOT-7) held a meeting on March 21 in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, to promote responsible marine wildlife tourism. The seminar was called “Sustainable Encounters” and aimed to raise awareness about important regulations in marine interactions. The Joint Memorandum Circular No. 01, Series of 2020, was a key focus of the event. This circular outlines the rules for marine wildlife tourism across the Philippines. It was created by various government departments, including the DOT and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. DOT-7 Director Judy de la Cruz-Gabato emphasized the importance of sustainability and involving local communities in tourism. She noted that the guidelines will help ensure that marine tourism benefits both the environment and local people. Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado discussed measures being taken for marine wildlife conservation. He highlighted the need for proactive steps to protect marine life rather than waiting for problems to arise. To this end, Aumentado has suspended whale shark interactions and feeding in the province until safer practices are established. He has also ordered the temporary closure of certain dive sites to allow for coral rehabilitation and to investigate damage in nearby areas.
