Bollywood faces decreased releases due to IPL influence
The Bollywood film industry is facing a tough few months with many Hindi films changing their release dates. This situation is causing fewer movies to be shown in theaters as audiences become more selective. With the Indian Premier League (IPL) coming up, several films have postponed their release. For example, "Jolly LLB 3," starring Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi, will now be released in August instead of April. Another film, "Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari," featuring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Sanya Malhotra, has moved its release to September 12. Delays are also caused by various factors. A source noted that the shooting started later than planned. Additionally, businessman Adar Poonawalla's acquisition of a significant stake in Dharma Productions contributed to the schedule changes. "Metro... In Dino," which was meant to release last year, is now set for July 4, 2025. The trade is feeling the effects of this lean period. Expert Atul Mohan mentioned that small filmmakers often avoid releasing during the IPL, preferring to delay their films by a month or two. However, not all filmmakers are concerned. Director Ananth Mahadevan plans to release "Phule" on April 10 to honor the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, stating that the specific date is important for the film's message.
