Bollywood film "Chhaava" blamed for Nagpur riots
A new Bollywood film, Chhaava, has been linked to violent riots in Nagpur, India. The movie tells the story of a Hindu warrior, Sambhaji, who fought against the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, a figure disliked by many Hindu nationalists. Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has stated that the film has stirred anger towards Aurangzeb. He emphasized the need for peace in Maharashtra despite rising tensions. Aurangzeb's legacy is controversial; while some believe he persecuted Hindus, others argue these claims are exaggerated. The issue has gained momentum in recent months, especially related to Aurangzeb's tomb in Aurangabad, which has been renamed to honor Sambhaji. Right-wing groups are calling for the tomb’s removal. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde compared Aurangzeb to Osama bin Laden and criticized the glorification of his legacy. Tensions escalated when rumors about the desecration of the Quran spread. This led to clashes in the city, resulting in damage to property and injuries to police. A curfew has been imposed, and authorities have arrested 51 people, with investigations ongoing against many others. The violence highlights increasing divisions between the majority Hindu population and the Muslim minority in India. Many Muslims feel targeted by right-wing groups, with trust deteriorating between communities over the past decade. Opposition leaders accuse the government of using communal tensions to divert attention from serious economic issues like inflation and unemployment.
