Boom Supersonic's XB-1 completes first supersonic flight in California
Boom Supersonic's XB-1 aircraft has successfully completed its first supersonic flight on January 28, 2025, at the Mojave Air & Space Port in California. This marks the first independently developed supersonic jet and the first civil supersonic jet from the U.S. The XB-1, piloted by Tristan Brandenburg, reached an altitude of 35,290 feet and achieved a speed of Mach 1.122, or 750 mph. This flight demonstrates advancements in technology for passenger supersonic travel. Boom plans to use the XB-1's technology to develop Overture, a new supersonic airliner. Overture aims to carry 64-80 passengers at Mach 1.7, nearly double the speed of current subsonic planes, on over 600 routes worldwide.
