Boston city council member arrested on fraud and theft charges
Boston City Council member Tania Fernandes Anderson was arrested on federal fraud and theft charges. She is accused of taking part of a $13,000 bonus meant for a staffer, who is a relative, during a meeting in a City Hall bathroom. Anderson faces five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft related to federal funds. She was indicted by a grand jury this week and was arrested outside her home. She is represented by a public defender. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has called for Anderson's resignation, stating that the charges undermine public trust and hinder her ability to serve effectively. Anderson was the first African immigrant and first Muslim elected to the council.
