Boulder terminates two Geological Survey leases, saving costs
The Department of Government Efficiency has canceled two leases for the U.S. Geological Survey in Boulder. Together, these leases cost nearly $1 million each year. One lease is for a large space of 29,170 square feet, with an annual cost of $913,334. The second lease is much smaller, at 3,830 square feet, costing $49,575 annually. The University of Colorado Boulder manages one of the leases but did not specify which one. A spokesperson for the university said they were informed on February 25 that the lease at the Marine Street Science Center would end on August 31. The U.S. Geological Survey has not provided information about how many employees will be impacted or what this means for their operations. A spokesperson stated they do not comment on personnel matters but reaffirmed their commitment to their mission within the Department of the Interior. The larger lease was terminated using a process called Mass Mod, which allows for uniform changes to multiple contracts. The details of the second lease's cancellation are still being finalized. The U.S. Geological Survey is working with the General Services Administration to make sure that facilities and assets are used efficiently. They emphasize the importance of maintaining strong conservation efforts while streamlining government procedures. More updates will be provided as they become available.
