Boyne Mountain Resort extends ski season into May
Boyne Mountain Resort in Northern Michigan is preparing to offer an unusual ski experience this spring. Thanks to a heavy snowfall season, they have built a large “glacier” on the Victor ski run that might allow skiing until Memorial Day. Recently, the snow base on the Victor run measured an impressive 280 inches. Kari Roder, the resort’s marketing director, remarked that this was a first for them. In previous years, they have competed with another ski area, Mount Bohemia, to see who could stay open longest, but this year’s snowy conditions have changed the game. The resort has invested in advanced snow-making technology. This includes new snow guns and underground pipes that help create snow when temperatures are right. This investment has led the Boyne team to make ambitious plans for the Victor run. Skiers have noticed that the Victor run feels different this year, resembling a more challenging black-diamond slope instead of its usual intermediate designation. The run ends near Boyne’s Clock Tower lodge, where visitors can watch the skiers through large glass windows. In early May, Boyne’s golf courses will also open, allowing guests to enjoy both skiing and golfing at the same time—a surprise outcome for this winter season. For those not interested in skiing or golfing, the resort has other attractions. Visitors can walk across the SkyBridge, the world's longest timber-towered suspension bridge, or enjoy the indoor Avalanche Bay waterpark. Skiing at Boyne Mountain is made more accessible under the Mitten Love special, which offers discounts for season pass holders from other Michigan ski resorts. Daily ski hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until April 6, after which the schedule will change to weekends until the snow melts. If skiing extends into Memorial Weekend, the resort plans to hold a celebration.
