Brazil arrests soldiers in alleged plot to assassinate President Lula before inauguration
Brazilian police have arrested five individuals, including four soldiers and a police officer, for allegedly plotting to assassinate President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in December 2022. This is the first reported attempt to kill Lula before his inauguration. The suspects were part of a criminal organization that planned to poison Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin. Investigations revealed they had military training and had discussed executing a Supreme Court member as part of their coup. The arrests occurred during a security operation for the G20 leaders' meeting in Rio. The plot, named "green and yellow dagger," referenced Brazil's flag colors and involved detailed planning to "neutralize" Lula and Alckmin.
