Brazil arrests soldiers over alleged plot to assassinate Lula
Brazilian police arrested four soldiers on Tuesday for an alleged plot to assassinate then President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in December 2022. The arrests occurred in Rio during a security operation for the G20 summit, although the army denied their involvement in that event. The suspects, described as having special forces training, are accused of planning a coup to prevent Lula's government from taking office. They allegedly intended to kill presidential candidates and a Supreme Court justice, aiming to establish a "crisis cabinet." The plot was codenamed "Green and Yellow Dagger," referencing Brazil's flag colors. The suspects face charges related to coup-plotting and forming a criminal organization. These developments follow a recent failed bomb attack on the Supreme Court by a suspected far-right extremist.
