Brazil focuses on Paris Agreement at COP30 climate talks
Brazil is set to host this year's UN climate talks, COP30, with a focus on improving the implementation of the Paris Agreement. President designate Andre Correa do Lago stresses the need for broader global participation, including major financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank. Do Lago, a former ambassador to India, is currently on a listening tour to connect with governments and understand their climate priorities. He insists that the goal is not to weaken the UN climate process but to enhance it by involving more international agencies in climate discussions. During COP29 in Azerbaijan, India raised concerns about decisions on climate finance. Brazil recognizes the importance of India's involvement in climate discussions, especially for achieving the Paris Agreement and 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Do Lago's first official visit as COP30 president is to India, underscoring their strong partnership. Brazil and India have previously worked together in various international forums like BASIC, BRICS, and G20. Do Lago believes their collaboration can help establish a united agenda for the Global South, addressing common climate challenges. However, he acknowledges that there are significant global challenges to face, such as the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and geopolitical conflicts affecting climate action.
