Brazil police indict former president Bolsonaro for alleged coup attempt
Brazilian police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others for allegedly attempting a coup after his 2022 election defeat. This indictment could further diminish Bolsonaro's political influence, as he is already barred from running in 2026 due to a separate case. The sealed indictment, which is about 700 pages long, will be reviewed by Brazil’s Supreme Court and Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Bolsonaro. The investigation includes allegations of smuggling and falsifying vaccination statuses. Bolsonaro has denied the coup allegations and called the investigation a product of "creativity." His allies are reportedly seeking a pardon for those involved in the January 8 riots, but passing such legislation may be difficult amid ongoing legal challenges.
