Brazilian police arrest five in plot to assassinate president Lula before inauguration
Brazilian police arrested five individuals, including a former cabinet member of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, for allegedly plotting to assassinate President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his vice-president-elect in late 2022. The arrests mark the first public acknowledgment of a conspiracy to kill Lula and stage a coup. The main suspect, retired Brigadier General Mario Fernandes, reportedly had a detailed plan titled "Green and Yellow Dagger" aimed at executing the plot on December 15, 2022. The plan included targeting a Supreme Court justice as well. The investigation revealed that many suspects are military personnel with Special Forces training, linked to Bolsonaro's administration. The federal police are expected to conclude their investigation into Bolsonaro's potential involvement in the coup by the end of November.
