Breast cancer screening rates are alarmingly low in the UK

A health minister has highlighted that breast cancer screenings are currently very low. Karin Smyth made this statement in Parliament, urging women to get screened. She explained that improving awareness of breast cancer symptoms is key for early diagnosis. James Cleverly, a former minister, asked the Government how it plans to raise this awareness. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 but has since recovered. Cleverly emphasized that early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes for women. Ms. Smyth acknowledged the low uptake of screenings and said it must be a priority. She also mentioned that the use of artificial intelligence could help speed up treatment, which is essential for better care. In another discussion, Lib Dem MP Charlie Maynard called for the Government to spend funds already allocated for brain tumor research. He noted that only half of the £40 million granted in 2018 has been used. Health Secretary Wes Streeting recognized the delays in using these funds. He assured that the Government is reviewing the situation to ensure families receive support in a timely manner.
