On Monday, the East Aurora District 131 school board appointed Brian Moreno to fill a vacant seat on the board. Moreno, a graduate of East Aurora High School in 2014, replaces Alex Arroyo, who stepped down to join the Kane County Board. At 28 years old, Moreno is the youngest member of the East Aurora school board in recent history. He is currently a community engagement specialist for the city of Aurora. Moreno attended local schools, including Bardwell Elementary and Waldo Middle School. He will serve the remainder of Arroyo's term, which ends in April 2027. During the same meeting, the board also approved Robert Halverson as the new superintendent, who will work alongside outgoing superintendent Jennifer Norrell until June. Moreno has received recognition for his community involvement, including an award from Aurora's mayor for saving a resident's life through CPR. He has also been noted for his quick thinking during a dangerous situation at the city’s warming center. Moreno mentioned the positive changes in the school district since his graduation. The graduation rate has improved significantly, now at 90%. He is also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice while taking classes part-time. As board elections approach on April 1, Moreno may not be the only new face. Three current members, including board president Annette Johnson, are seeking re-election against several challengers.
