Brisbane storm brings giant hail and gustnado, meteorologists clarify

A severe storm hit Brisbane on Friday, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail. The Bureau of Meteorology clarified that a swirling wind observed on the Brisbane River was a "gustnado," not a mini tornado. Hailstones measuring three to five centimeters were reported in Morningside and the inner city, while Boonah and Flagstone saw even larger stones, reaching six to seven centimeters. Meteorologists noted that hail of this size is classified as "giant hail," with five centimeters being the threshold. More severe weather is expected as Queensland enters its peak storm season.
