Brisbane teacher sentenced for years of child sexual abuse
A teacher in Brisbane has been sentenced for sexually abusing a student over several years. Kellie Ann-Marie Whiteside, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of repeated sexual conduct with a child. She had groomed the victim, who is now non-binary, starting when they were just 12 years old. In court, the prosecution explained that Whiteside, who was a science teacher, developed a friendship with the girl that became sexual. This inappropriate relationship included exchanging messages and intimate photos on social media. The abuse continued until March 2023, when the victim was 20. Whiteside took advantage of the child in vulnerable moments. The victim described how the abuse left them feeling permanently damaged, struggling with relationships and anxiety. They expressed disappointment that their parents trusted Whiteside, believing her to be a safe adult. During the hearing, it was revealed that Whiteside had been dealing with personal issues, including post-natal depression. Her defense attorney noted that she has lost her teaching job and is unlikely to work in education again. The judge criticized Whiteside for breaching the trust placed in her as a teacher. She was sentenced to five years in prison and can apply for parole in March 2027. Resources for help were also provided for anyone affected by sexual abuse.
