Brisbane's Gabba to be replaced by new Olympic stadium
The Queensland Government has announced plans to build a new 63,000-seat stadium in Brisbane for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This new venue will serve as the main location for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the athletics events. Premier David Crisafulli confirmed the decision, which comes despite previous promises made before the 2024 state elections that no new stadium would be built. He acknowledged this change, saying, "I have to own that, and I will." Crisafulli expressed regret for the decision but stated it was necessary for hosting a significant event like the Olympics. The new stadium will replace the Gabba, which will be demolished after the 2032 Games. The Gabba has been a historic sports venue but is considered outdated and poorly maintained. Crisafulli mentioned it would be nice to see Australia’s cricket team play at the Gabba one last time during the Olympics. In addition to the main stadium, a new 25,000-seat aquatic centre will be constructed in Spring Hill, and a 20,000-seat arena will be built near the athletes' village. Rowing competitions will take place on the Fitzroy River, a location known for its crocodiles. However, the government assures that the waters are safe for athletes. Football matches are planned for Cairns, located in northeast Australia. The Brisbane Queensland Tennis Centre will also undergo significant upgrades to host tennis events during the Games.
