British couple faces court in Afghanistan after arrest

A British couple, Peter and Barbie Reynolds, are set to appear in an Afghan court, according to their family. The couple, aged 79 and 75, have been involved in educational programs in Afghanistan for 18 years. Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, expressed concerns about their health and the fairness of their trial. Peter is dealing with a heart condition, and the family fears he may not receive the medication he needs while detained. They are also worried that the absence of a competent interpreter could affect the couple's ability to present their case effectively in court. The Reynolds were arrested in February while traveling home to Bamyan province. They were taken into custody alongside Faye Hall, an American friend, and their translator from their Rebuild training business. Reports indicate the couples have been separated and unable to communicate for over a week. The Reynolds have continued their work in Afghanistan even after the Taliban took over in 2021, which has led to significant restrictions on women's employment and girls' education. The couple was married in Kabul in 1970 after meeting at the University of Bath.
