British mother confesses to murdering newborn son
A British woman has confessed to killing her newborn son in 1998 and hiding the incident for over 25 years. Joanne Sharkey, 55, from Liverpool, testified in court that she kept her pregnancy and the murder a secret from her family, including her husband. Sharkey gave birth to her second child, referred to as “Baby Callum,” in the bathroom of her home. She then allegedly suffocated him and left his body in the woods. Her trial began last week, and she has asked for leniency, claiming she suffered from severe postnatal depression at the time. According to reports, Sharkey managed to conceal the pregnancy from her husband, Neil Sharkey, by wearing loose clothing. The couple lived separate schedules to avoid raising suspicion. Neil and their adult son Matthew have spoken in her defense, highlighting her dedication to their first child. Sharkey’s defense team argued that the overwhelming stress of motherhood and her mental health issues led to her tragic decisions. They expressed concern about the expectations placed on her during this difficult time. Baby Callum was found in a wooded area years after his birth, and local residents helped pay for his headstone. Sharkey’s sentencing is pending, following the recent court hearings.
