Brook Park approves loans for storefront renovations

The Brook Park City Council has launched the Storefront Targeted Areas Renovation (STAR) Program. This initiative aims to provide support to local businesses in improving their storefronts. The council approved the program unanimously on March 18. The STAR Program offers low-interest loans of 1 percent for up to 60 months. The loans are available to businesses located on Snow Road, Smith Road, Sheldon Road, and at the intersection of Engle and Holland roads. Councilman Tom Dufour explained that improvements should be visible from the street, such as signage, awnings, and lighting. The program is designed to assist businesses with existing exterior code violations. However, it does not cover new construction, billboards, or improvements that are not street-visible. Councilman Jimmy Mencini expressed hope that the program will foster new partnerships and support long-standing local businesses. To qualify, business owners must apply and get approval from the Brook Park Building and Economic Development departments. There are specific eligibility requirements, including a minimum credit score of 700. The loans will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and funds are limited. The City Council has allocated $500,000 from the Economic Development Fund for this year's program. Dufour emphasized that the initiative aims to beautify commercial areas while also uplifting local businesses. Interested business owners can contact Economic Development Commissioner Paul Marnecheck for application details.
