Brooke Strauss wins national mile championship for Connecticut
Brooke Strauss, a senior from Glastonbury, has won the national indoor mile championship. She achieved this victory on Sunday at the New Balance Nationals held in Boston. Strauss ran the mile in an impressive time of 4:39.53. This makes her the fastest girl in Connecticut history for the mile. Strauss has been a standout runner in Connecticut for the past four years. She has won multiple State Open titles in cross country and in track for both indoor and outdoor events. However, this is her first national title. Her track coach, Brian Gaudreau, described her excitement after winning. “She was like a kid in a candy shop,” he said. During the race, Strauss started in fourth to sixth place but made a strong move as the race progressed. She surged into third place before the final lap, where she overtook two runners to clinch the win. Earlier this month, Strauss also won the New England 1,000-meter title, breaking the meet record with a time of 2:46.05. She had previously secured the State Open title in the 1,000 meters and placed second in the 1,600 meters. In February, she finished second at the Millrose Games in the high school mile, setting a new personal record and breaking a long-standing state record.
