Brookfield considers banning self-service cannabis kiosks

A cannabis kiosk in Brookfield Square Mall is causing concern among local officials and residents. An alderman wants the kiosk removed, while the owner insists it operates safely and legally. Bill Fuchs, owner of Ethereal Gold Dispensary, explains that the kiosk sells cannabis products like gummies. Until recently, it also sold psychedelic mushrooms, but Fuchs removed them at the mall's request. He stated that customers must show a photo ID, be at least 21 years old, and use a valid credit card to buy products. The kiosk has been in the mall since December 2023, located outside a Barnes and Noble. Some community members were surprised to learn about the kiosk and the ensuing proposal to ban it. Alderman Mike Hallquist expressed concerns about children accessing cannabis products. Community members reacted differently. Cheryl Wolfe questioned if kids still frequent malls, while Dave Wise wondered about the legality of such sales. Hallquist noted that selling tobacco or alcohol in vending machines is currently prohibited in Brookfield and believes cannabis should have similar regulations. Fuchs agreed that preventing youth from accessing cannabis is important. He emphasized their commitment to legal sales and age compliance. The mayor has referred the proposal to create an ordinance against self-service cannabis kiosks to a committee, with Hallquist expecting to introduce an ordinance in the coming months.
