BSF seizes heroin worth ₹6.77 crore in West Bengal
The Border Security Force (BSF) recovered a large amount of heroin at the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. On March 21, 2025, BSF personnel seized 3.387 kg of heroin worth approximately ₹6.77 crore during a smuggling attempt in Murshidabad district. The BSF acted on credible intelligence and increased their surveillance in the area. Around 4 p.m., they spotted two suspicious individuals approaching the border. When approached, the men tried to escape, leaving behind packages of the drug in the bushes. One of the smugglers was caught, and he was identified as a Bangladeshi citizen. During questioning, the arrested man confessed he was involved in cross-border smuggling. He said he had received the heroin from Indian associates to deliver to another contact in Bangladesh. The authorities conducted further searches and confirmed the packages contained heroin. The BSF handed over the arrested smuggler and the heroin to the relevant department after legal procedures. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in securing the long, 2,216 km India-Bangladesh border, which is prone to smuggling due to its geography. In a related report, the Ministry of Home Affairs noted an increase in drug seizures along the border. In 2024, contraband worth over ₹46 crore was seized, up from ₹43 crore in 2023 and ₹34 crore in 2022. This rise shows a growing problem with drug trafficking in the region.
