Businessman aims to halt sinking of S.S. United States as artificial reef in Florida
A Brooklyn businessman, John Quadrozzi Jr., is trying to stop the S.S. United States from becoming the world's largest artificial reef in Florida. He proposes transforming the ship into a sustainable floating ecosystem with coworking spaces and affordable housing. The ship is currently docked in Philadelphia and was scheduled to depart for Mobile, Alabama, on November 14, but weather delays have postponed the move. Quadrozzi and his backer, Dan McSweeney, are working to keep the ship in the Northeast. Okaloosa County officials, who plan to sink the ship as a reef, have not been contacted by Quadrozzi. They maintain their plan remains unchanged, despite his concerns about the ship's journey to Florida.
