Byadgi chilli farmers in north Karnataka face price drops

thehindu.com

Byadgi chillies are an essential ingredient for many cooks due to their vibrant color and flavor. However, farmers in north Karnataka are facing difficulties as prices continue to drop. A recent visit to the Byadgi chilli market showed that many farmers were anxious about their produce. On Thursdays, a police route march occurs in the market to maintain order. This routine started after a violent protest in March 2024 when farmers reacted to a sudden price plunge. The market is busy as traders and commission agents assess the chillies prepared for auction. Unfortunately, prices for Byadgi chillies have not improved since last year. For example, on March 20, 2025, the average price for Byadgi Kaddi chillies was ₹23,359, a significant decrease compared to ₹35,099 in February 2024. Meanwhile, other varieties also saw lower prices. Farmers express deep concern due to the overstock from past years. About 40% of last year’s chillies remain unsold, contributing to the current price drop. Traders are also struggling as they deal with leftover stock purchased at higher prices now worth much less. Additionally, strict testing standards for exports have been implemented, resulting in rejected shipments. Some chilli farmers are experiencing heavy losses, leading to calls for government intervention. The Chief Minister of Karnataka has written to the Union Minister urging for increased minimum support prices to help struggling farmers. As a long-term solution, some propose diversifying crops to achieve better yields and stabilize prices in the future. Farmers and traders alike are hoping for market changes to improve their situation soon.
