BYD launches super-fast charging network in China

BEIJING: BYD introduced a new technology for electric vehicles (EVs) on March 17, which promises to charge cars as fast as filling up a gas tank. The company revealed its "super e-platform" at a live event from Shenzhen, saying it offers charging speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts (kW). This allows cars to gain 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes. The new charging speed is double that of Tesla’s superchargers, which reach a maximum of 500kW. Quick charging is crucial for encouraging more people to use EVs, as it addresses fears about how long it takes to recharge a vehicle. BYD's founder, Wang Chuanfu, emphasized the importance of minimizing charging time to match traditional petrol refueling. Initially, the new charging technology will be available in two of BYD’s models: the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV. These vehicles will be priced from 270,000 yuan (about US$37,330). Additionally, BYD plans to build over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations throughout China to support this new platform. The company did not disclose when this charging network would be completed or how much it plans to invest in these facilities. Currently, BYD drivers often use charging stations from other companies or public chargers managed by third-party operators. Since 2014, Tesla has been operational in China with its supercharger network. BYD's competitors, including Nio, Li Auto, Xpeng, and Zeekr, have also been developing their own charging stations. While BYD has focused on plug-in hybrids, it sold 4.2 million units last year and aims to sell between 5 million and 6 million vehicles this year.
