Cab services to Hyderabad airport disrupted over low fares

Cab services to the Hyderabad international airport are facing disruptions due to a boycott organized by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU). This action aims to protest against low fare rates set by ride-hailing apps, which the union claims hurt drivers' earnings. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has warned travelers about potential cab shortages due to the ongoing protest. Passengers may experience longer wait times and are encouraged to explore alternative transportation options at the airport. According to TGPWU representative Shaik Salauddin, many cab drivers joined the boycott because they believe that the current fare system is unfair. The union has repeatedly sought help from the Telangana government and relevant authorities but says there has been no effective response. The TGPWU is advocating for a fair and consistent fare structure to ensure that cab drivers receive decent wages and have economic stability. They argue that the pricing model negatively impacts drivers' earnings and ignores their work efforts. Salauddin emphasized that the boycott is meant to negotiate better pay and working conditions for drivers, not to inconvenience passengers. The union hopes that the government will take immediate action to rectify the pricing issue. Similar protests have occurred in Bengaluru, where another union is also demanding fairer wages from ride-hailing companies. They, too, are asking for a standardized fare system to support drivers' livelihoods.
