Calgary launches hydrogen hub to create 100 jobs

Calgary is preparing to enter the hydrogen energy sector with a new project called the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub. This hub aims to create 100 jobs and generate $75 million in private sector development. The project is managed by the Transition Accelerator, a charity dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Hydrogen Hub will collaborate with Alberta’s hydrogen producers and facilities that will use hydrogen. Focus areas include airports, heat and power, industrial transportation, and trains. Calgary Economic Development (CED) has been working on this project for over two years. Funding for the hub comes from a group that includes Alberta Innovates, the City of Calgary, and the federal government, totaling more than $3 million. Brad Parry, CEO of CED, believes the hub will inspire energy innovation in Calgary and attract new projects. He calls it an exciting opportunity for the region. Parry emphasizes that Calgary has the resources, talent, and leadership needed to succeed in the hydrogen sector. Zak Cunningham, who leads the CRH2 project, explains that the hub will be based in downtown Calgary but will operate across the region. In addition, there are plans to connect Calgary’s hub with the existing Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub, creating a corridor for hydrogen development. This will help increase demand and support the growth of both hubs.
