Canada considers ban on Chinese auto technology following U.S. proposal
Canada is considering a ban on Chinese automotive technology, following a U.S. proposal to restrict such technology in vehicles due to national security concerns. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland confirmed this intention, stating, "The short answer is: absolutely." The U.S. plan would bar Chinese software and hardware from vehicles, impacting the entry of Chinese cars into the U.S. market. Canada has already imposed high tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and is exploring further restrictions on various Chinese products. Freeland noted that discussions on Chinese software will be included in consultations with Canadian industry and labor. The U.S. regulation, still pending finalization, aims to prevent potential surveillance and control of vehicles by foreign adversaries.
