Canada enhances Arctic cooperation with US in response to Russian threat
Canada will enhance cooperation with the United States in the Arctic due to concerns over Russian aggression. The country plans to appoint an Arctic ambassador and establish new consulates in Anchorage, Alaska, and Nuuk, Greenland. The new strategy highlights the need for increased security in the North American Arctic, which covers over 4.4 million square kilometers. Less than 16% of its waters have been properly surveyed. Canada aims to collaborate with the U.S. on energy security, supply chains, climate change, and critical minerals. This follows discussions between U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding Arctic issues.
