Canada explores potential role in AUKUS security pact with allies

Canada is discussing potential involvement in the AUKUS security pact with the U.K., U.S., and Australia. This pact, established three years ago, aims to enhance security in the Indo-Pacific by developing nuclear-powered submarines for Australia. Canadian military leaders have expressed concern over Canada's absence from AUKUS and are advocating for the replacement of the aging Victoria-class submarine fleet. The second pillar of AUKUS focuses on military interoperability and advanced technologies. The three countries are already collaborating with Japan on these priorities and will now consult with Canada, South Korea, and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Canada’s Defence Department is seeking information for a new fleet of conventionally powered submarines.
