Canada mandates oil and gas sector to cut emissions by one-third by 2032
Canada's oil and gas producers must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one-third over the next eight years, according to new draft regulations announced by Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. This requirement aims to address the sector's significant contribution to national emissions.
The regulations, which are two years behind schedule, could heighten tensions between the federal government and Alberta, where officials oppose the cap. The Alberta government recently launched a campaign against the emissions cap, arguing it could harm the province's economy.
The draft regulations will be open for public comment until January 2025. They propose that emissions from upstream oil and gas operations be reduced to 35% below 2019 levels by 2030-2032, while allowing production to continue to rise.
