Canada may face significant rise in illegal immigration
A Canadian professor warns that illegal immigration may increase significantly due to strict border policies during the Trump administration. Kelly Sundberg, from Mount Royal University, said on "60 Minutes Overtime" that Canada could face a "tsunami" of illegal immigrants seeking refuge from American authorities. Sundberg expressed concern that many could bring guns and drugs with them. He specifically mentioned President Trump’s decision to send "criminal illegal aliens" to Guantánamo Bay, which he believes may encourage more people to migrate to Canada. An anonymous member of a Mexican cartel confirmed this trend. He noted that many migrants are now trying to get to Canada instead of entering the U.S. Most of these migrants are from Venezuela and fear deportation. The issue has gained attention with reports of Canadian traffickers allegedly advertising human smuggling operations. Sundberg highlighted the potential risks associated with this influx of illegal immigrants. In the context of these developments, Trump has criticized Canada for not securing its border effectively. He has imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and has threatened further tariffs on Canadian goods. In February 2025, illegal border crossings in the U.S. reached a record low. This decline was down 96% from December 2023, which saw the highest numbers of encounters at the southern border.
