Canada to appoint Arctic ambassador and open new consulates in strategic policy shift
Canada is set to appoint a new Arctic Ambassador and open two consulates in Anchorage, Alaska, and Nuuk, Greenland. This move is part of a new Arctic Foreign Policy aimed at addressing changing geopolitical dynamics in the region. The policy, launched by Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, includes a $34.7 million investment over five years. It responds to increased tensions due to the war in Ukraine, climate change, and growing interest from non-Arctic states. The Arctic Foreign Policy aims to enhance cooperation with the United States and Nordic allies. It also seeks to align diplomatic efforts with Canada's updated defense policy, addressing security challenges in the Arctic.
