Canada's cabinet ministers meet to strategize on Trump administration
OTTAWA - Federal cabinet ministers are meeting today to discuss Canada's approach to the incoming Donald Trump administration. This is the first meeting of a revived cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. relations since Trump left office in early 2021.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland chairs the committee and will address the media later. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly stated that Ottawa already has a plan in place to address potential challenges.
Concerns include Trump's campaign promises of tariffs on U.S. imports and mass deportations, which could impact the Canadian economy and increase migration at the border.
