Canadians increasingly alarmed by U.S. economic aggression

A recent poll shows that many Canadians are increasingly worried about U.S. tariffs and aggression under President Donald Trump. The poll, conducted by Leger from March 14 to March 16, included over 1,500 Canadian adults. It found that 41% of respondents see these issues as the biggest threats to Canada, a jump of 13 points since earlier this month. The highest concern comes from Quebec, where 51% of people identified tariffs and Trump as major issues. Other regions showed varying levels of concern: 42% of Ontarians, 39% of British Columbians, and 35% of Atlantic Canadians shared similar worries. The poll's online format means it cannot be given a margin of error. The results indicate that both men and women are equally alarmed, with 41% of men and 40% of women naming U.S. relations as a top issue. Older Canadians are more concerned. About 54% of respondents aged 55 and older think Trump's policies are a serious threat, compared to 38% among those aged 35 to 54 and only 23% among younger Canadians. Alongside concerns about U.S. relations, 18% of Canadians noted inflation as their chief issue, while others mentioned housing affordability and healthcare. Political parties showed differing views, with 57% of Liberals and 55% of Bloc Québécois supporters identifying U.S. relations as a priority. Concerns have grown since the U.S. recently imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, prompting Canada to retaliate. Over one-third of Canadians said they might consider moving to another country if Canada were to become part of the U.S., with younger respondents being more inclined to move. The Canadian Research Insights Council has noted that online surveys do not allow for a margin of error due to the lack of random sampling.
